Emergency in Eagle Pass

Last Tuesday, the mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, declared an emergency after roughly 2,500 mostly Venezuelan migrants arrived in the city of just 28,000 residents.

Reporting from the Right: Immigration border upheaval stokes fear among Eagle Pass residents: 'Send extra help' (Washington Examiner)

From The Flag: Over 6 million Venezuelans have fled the ailing country since 2014, with millions ending up in nearby Colombia and Peru. Last Wednesday, the Biden administration said it would grant temporary legal status to about 500,000 Venezuelans already in the US, allowing them to work legally. Here’s what both sides are saying.

Border Crisis Is Compounding

  • The surge of migrants is not only taxing state and federal governments. It’s also depleting the resources of small cities like Eagle Pass.

  • The latest developments at the border are placing increasing pressure on President Joe Biden to take meaningful action to secure the border.

  • Despite the risks of the journey and the potential for deportation, a massive influx of people from around the globe are arriving at the Southern border.

Officials Scramble to Respond as Migrants Overwhelm Texas City J. David Goodman et al., The New York Times: “The mayor, Rolando Salinas Jr., declared a state of emergency, seeking additional support to respond to an influx of migrants that reached 2,500 on Wednesday, overwhelming the city of 28,000. … The arrivals, including a large number of people from Venezuela, were part of a substantial increase in recent crossings along the southern border. The number of arrivals has reached levels not seen in months, taxing local governments in California, Arizona, and Texas as large numbers of people claiming asylum have been released by Border Patrol agents directly into border communities. That was the case in Eagle Pass, officials said, where the city’s lone shelter provider strained to accommodate the sudden arrival of so many people. … Mr. Salinas in Eagle Pass said he felt he had no choice but to declare a state of emergency to start receiving again the state resources that had pulled away during the decline in arrivals over the summer.”

Latest wave of migrants at US-Mexico border puts Biden under renewed pressure Priscilla Alvarez, CNN: “Biden has been plagued by issues on the border since his first months in office… Over the last two years, his administration has continued to face fierce pushback from Republicans — and at times, Democrats — over his immigration policies. … But the new wave of newcomers — many of whom are from Venezuela — paints a grim outlook for the fall as Biden ramps up his reelection campaign and Republicans continue to hammer the administration over its handling of the border. … In the absence of immigration reform, the administration has put in place a patchwork of policies to try to stem the flow of migrants journeying to the US southern border amid unprecedented mass migration in the western hemisphere. … The arrival of migrants at the US southern border also affects inner cities, where asylum seekers usually reside as they go through their immigration proceedings, expanding the scope of the issue for the Biden administration.”

Biden Admin is Allowing This

  • “The scenes out of Eagle Pass, Texas, leave no doubt the actual policy of the Biden administration is uncontrolled mass illegal immigration.”

  • Our immigration policies have become so lax and migrants from other countries have learned this, and are taking advantage of it.

  • The mayor of Eagle Pass did not hold back in his rebuke of President Biden, laying the blame for the current situation at his feet.

It’s No Accident The Southern Border Is Collapsing, It’s Intentional John Daniel Davidson, The Federalist: “But notice how the illegal immigrants in Melugin’s footage are walking calmly, not running, not trying to evade Border Patrol. They show every indication they believe they will not be detained long. And of course, they’re right. It’s impossible for federal authorities to detain this many people arriving within such a short timeframe. There is simply nowhere to put them. A soft-sided facility erected by Customs and Border Protection that could house about 2,000 quickly reached capacity early in the week, leaving federal officials little choice but to parole mass numbers of illegal immigrants and release them from custody on their own recognizance. They are now making their way to points all across the United States. The vast majority of them will stay for good. This is not a mistake or a mishap, the unintended result of an ill-considered policy. This is intentional. Flooding the border with illegal immigrants is the actual policy.”

Biden’s Backdoor Amnesty, The Editors at National Review: “The original idea of temporary protected status was to provide a legal humanitarian arrangement for aliens whose home country was subject to a hurricane, earthquake, or famine. The keyword was supposed to be ‘temporary’. But the status has become a favorite legal tool of those who want to provide backdoor amnesty because the letter of the law allows endless extensions, and ample stretching of the definitions, for those who qualify. …The sheer number of those applying for temporary protected status and work permits will mean months of administrative backlog and opportunity for those who get in now. The length of the work permit is almost invaluable as it gives ‘temporary’ migrants time to settle down, marry, and have children who become permanent U.S. citizens… The constant stretching of our legal definitions of ‘refugees’ or ‘temporary status’ makes a joke of our immigration laws and invites more law-breaking…”

Latino Voters Want Biden to Take Action

Recent polling found that a majority of Latino voters want President Biden to take more aggressive actions to both provide immigration relief to millions of immigrants living in the US without legal status and secure the southern border.

  • The survey from the Immigration Hub found that 85% of surveyed Latino voters indicated they wanted the Biden administration to expand the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, so additional immigrants from crisis-stricken countries could live and work in the US legally.

  • It also found that 75% support offering temporary legal status to unauthorized immigrants who have lived in the US "for a long time." Support for legalizing "Dreamers", or undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children, stood at 77%.

Another poll from the center-right LIBRE Institute found that 65% of 1000 Latinos surveyed indicated that more needed to be done to control illegal immigration along the southern border. The Immigration Hub-commissioned survey also found 63% of Latino voters support increased border security (CBS News).

Do you believe it's possible to provide relief for current and future migrants while also securing the border?
